One Our 8th activity for the school was for the Parents of students in the Collegiate school. The program on “Education of Children is a Partnership Enterprise” was conducted by Deshabandu Jezima Ismail a distinguished Bridegetine of both local and international repute.  Three programs were conducted as follows:

Parents of students in Grades 6, 7 & 8 (27th February 2013)

Parents of students in Grades 9, 10 & 11 (28th February 2013) and

• Parents of students in Grades 12 & 13 (01st March 2013)

 
Ms. Ismail’s presentations focused on the theme “Parents have become so convinced that Educators know what is best for their Children that they forget that themselves are the Experts”

In her presentations she touched upon different aspects of children becoming more competent and independent and that they spend much of their time away from our supervision.  She stressed on the fact that they need recognition of their developing maturity, and at the same time, they are still children, and require our protection, guidance, and discipline. To set effective limits she said, we must remember both sides of this balance and create an enabling environment to develop a strong-parent child relationship for their fulfillment as human beings. She emphasized that children’s rights are also much spoken of today and it is important that we also balance these rights against responsibilities

Keeping a healthy attitude towards competition and providing competitive experiences

Recognizing strengths whilst also acknowledging that weaknesses exist in every strong child 

Identifying talents and creating a suitable environment for developing high level of achievements in different fields

Developing a positive reaction to your child’s emotions and emotional responses

Discussing and resolving issues of identity and values

Maintaining an environment for selective use of social media and a balanced attitude towards use of the Mobile

Developing citizenship skills to live in pluralistic Sri Lanka

Recognizing that the Educational environment plays a prominent role in development of values to contribute to the peace and harmony of the country

At each of the Presentations, Rev. Sr. Shermila Jayawardena (Principal, Collegiate School) gave an Introductory address whilst Dr. Nirmala M. Pieris, President, PPA introduced the Resource person. Each session was followed up with an interactive discussion.  Parents were highly appreciative of the program and several requests for more such programs were made.
